“A free person tells her own story. A valued person lives in a society in which her story has a place.” -Rebecca Solnit
I'm Allison, and I work to use stories to strengthen communities. My experience lies at the confluence of multimedia journalism, strategic communication, nonprofit youth development, community engagement and social justice. My ambition is to create space for previously untold stories and to leverage the influence of language to heighten empathy and equity.
I find hope in the idea that uncovering truth about the reality of who we are and what is actually going on can lead to the further development of who we want to be, what we want to happen and what kind of communities we want to create. The potential our stories and words have to shift power and resources intrigues me. The resilience, energy and leadership of young people inspires me. The way that community and communication can intersect to lead us to act more compassionately motivates me. The questions of "Whose stories are we telling?" and "Whose voices are telling those stories?" keep me up at night. I believe whole-heartedly in the role that storytelling and listening can play in creating a society where every person is valued and would love to connect and collaborate in pursuit of this vibrant vision. |
